Pioneering Dominican Physicians & Medical Innovators

Dominican Medical Pioneers

Presented by the CUNY Dominican Studies Institute in partnership with Columbia University Irving Medical Center’s Office of Academic and Community Partnerships, this documentary double feature is part of the CUNY Cultural Historical Legacy Initiative, an initiative made possible by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education. This event celebrates the lives and enduring legacies of two pioneering Dominican physicians: Dr. Evangelina Rodríguez Perozo, the first woman in the Dominican Republic to graduate from medical school, and Dr. Juan Manuel Taveras Rodríguez, widely regarded as the father of modern neuroradiology.

Through the screening of the two documentaries, the program will explore their groundbreaking contributions to medicine, public health, education, and medical innovation, as well as the barriers they overcame throughout their careers. The event will also invite discussion about how their legacies can continue to inform, inspire, and create opportunities for future generations in medicine and healthcare.

Language of the Film:

The documentary on Dr. Evangelina Rodríguez Perozo is presented in Spanish with English subtitles.

The documentary on Dr. Juan Manuel Taveras Rodríguez is presented primarily in English. Portions featuring Spanish-language interviews will include English subtitles.

* Special recognition and appreciation to the tremendous support from U.S. Senators Charles E. Schumer, Kirsten Gillibrand, and Representative Adrinao Espaillat for funding this cultural initiative that will benefit youth and families for generations.
